And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, The LORD liveth the God of Israel, before whom I stand, these years neither dew nor rain will be, but according to my word.
Then came to him the word of the LORD, saying,
Get thee hence, and go eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
And it shall be that you will drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.
So he went and did according to the word of the LORD; he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning; and bread and flesh in the evening; and drank of the brook. And it came to pass after days, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in earth.8 Then came to him the word of the LORD, saying, Arise, and go to Zarephath, which is by Zidon, and dwell there; behold, I have commanded there a widow woman to sustain thee.
And he arose, and went to Zarephath; and came to the gate, behold, there was a widow gathering sticks; and he called her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a vessel some water to drink.
And she was going to bring it, he called her and said, Fetch me now, a morsel of bread in thine hand.
And she said, As the LORD liveth thy God, which have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse; and behold gathering two sticks, and I will prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: But do it first for me a little cake, and bring it unto me; after make for thee and for thy son.
For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, and the cruse of oil fail, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.
And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and did eat it, and he, and her house many days.
The pot of meal shall not ended, and the jar of oil did not fail; according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.
And after these things came to pass fell ill the son of the woman, mistress of the house; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left.
And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with you, man of God? It came to me to bring my iniquity to remembrance, and to slay my son?
And he said, Give me your son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him on his bed, And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, even to this widow with whom I stay, afflicted, by slaying her son?
And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee that this child's soul come into him.
And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the boy's soul came into him again, and he revived.
And Elijah took the child, and brought the chamber into the house, and gave it to her mother; and Elijah said, See here, your son lives.
And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.
And it came to pass after many days, the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; I will give rain upon the earth.
And Elijah went to present himself to Ahab; and the famine was severe in Samaria.
And Ahab called Obadiah, the steward; and Obadiah greatly feared the LORD,
For it came to pass, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.
And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and all the rivers; it may be that we find grass, so that we may preserve the horses and mules, and not lose all the animals.
So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah was also alone on the other caminho. Being as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met; and Obadiah recognized him, and fell on his face, and said: Art thou my lord Elias?
And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.
And he said, What have I sinned, to deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?
Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee; and when they said is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.
And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.
And it could be that departing me I thee, the Spirit of the LORD took you, do not know where, and I come to give and tell Ahab, and did not find thee, he will kill me; but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.
Was I not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the Lord? How I hid a hundred men of the prophets of the Lord, to fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here; he would kill me.
And Elijah said, By the living Lord of hosts, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself to him.
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, he said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel 18 Then he said: I have not troubled Israel, but thou and thy father's house, because they have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, thou hast followed Baalim.
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel; as well as four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table.
So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel; and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.
And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? If the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him.
Elijah and the prophets of Baal
And Elijah said unto the people, I alone am left a prophet of the LORD, but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
Give to us therefore, two calves, and let them choose for themselves one bullock, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire, and I will dress the other bullock, and lay on the wood, and put no fire.
And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and it shall be the god who answers by fire let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call on the name of your god, but put no fire.
And they took the bullock which was given them, and prepared; and called on the name of Baal from morning till noon, saying: Ah! Baal, answer us! But there was no voice, no one answered; And they leaped upon the altar which was feito. And it came to pass, when midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice; however there were no voice, no answer, nor any that regarded.
And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him; and restored the Lord's altar, which was broken.
And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom came the word of the LORD, saying, Israel shall be thy name.
And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD; he made a trench about the altar, according to the breadth of two measures of seed.
And he put the wood, and cut the bullock in pieces, and put it on the wood.
And I said: Fill four barrels of water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood. And I said, Do it the second time; And they did it the second time. He said, Do it the third time; And they did it the third time;
And the water ran around the altar; and the trench he filled with water.
It happened at the time of being offered the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, be known this day that thou art God in Israel and that I am thy servant, and that according to thy word I have done all these things.
Hear me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast return your heart.
Then fell fire from the LORD, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
What all the people saw, they fell on their faces, and they said, The LORD is God! The Lord alone is God And Elijah said unto them, Take hold of the prophets of Baal, that none of them escape. And they laid hands on them; and Elijah made them go down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
And Elijah said to Ahab, Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.
And Ahab went up to eat and drink; Elijah went up to the top of Carmel, and bowed to the ground and put his face between his knees.
And said to his servant, Go up now, look to the side of the sea. And he went up and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.
And it came to pass at the seventh time, and said, Behold a little cloud like a man's hand, rising from the sea. And he said, Go up and say to Ahab, Prepare thy chariot and go down, that the rain stop thee not.
And it came to pass, however, the sky was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain; and Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah, and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
Jezebel threatened Elijah
And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how slain all the prophets with the sword.
Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to tell you: the gods do so unto me, and more also, if a certain morrow about this time I make not thy life as the life of one of them.
What seeing it, he got up and went for his life, was gone, and came to Beersheba, which is in Judah, and left his servant.
But he went to the desert, a day's journey, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and asked that he might die, and said: Enough, O LORD; Now take away my life, for I am no better than my Cambodia.5 And he lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
And he looked, and behold, at his head was a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water; and ate and drank, and made to lie down.
And the angel of Jehovah came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat, because you will be very long the caminho.8 stood up then, and ate and drank; and the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.
And there went into a cave and spent the night; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and said unto him, What doest thou here Elijah?
And he said, I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts, because the sons of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword, and I am left alone, and they seek my life, to take.
And God said to him: Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake;
And after the earthquake a fire; but also the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
And it came to pass, listening to Elijah wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood at the entrance of the cave; and behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts, because the sons of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword, and I alone am left; and they seek my life to take it away.
And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus; and, arriving there, anoint Hazael king over Síria. Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint prophet in your place.
And it shall be that escape the sword of Hazael, shall Jehu slay; and he who escapes the sword of Jehu shall kill you Eliseu.18 also be left seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.
So he went Elijah there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth; and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah; and said, Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then follow you. And he said unto him, Go back again; therefore I made thee?
He came back because of the following, and took the yoke of oxen, and killed them, and with the instruments of the oxen baked meats, and gave unto the people, and they ate; then got up and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him. Então veio a palavra do SENHOR a Elias, o tisbita, dizendoArise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria! behold, it is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to possess it.
And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? Speak unto it more, saying, Thus saith the Lord: In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth lick too, your own blood.
And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And I said, I have found thee; because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.
Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and pluck up thy seed, and cut off from Ahab every male, both slave and free in Israel;
And I will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah; for the provocation with which you have provoked me and made Israel to sin.
And of Jezebel also spoke the LORD, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.
He who dies of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and who dies in the field the birds of the heavens eat.
But there was none like Ahab, who did sell himself to do what was evil in the sight of the LORD; because Jezebel his wife incited him.
And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, whom the LORD cast out of their possession, before the children of Israel.
it came to pass, when Ahab heard these words, he rent his clothes, and covered his bag of flesh, and fasted; and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.
Then came the word of the Lord to Elijah the Tishbite, Seest thou how Ahab has humbled himself before me? So, when they were humbled himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days, but in his son's days will bring about their casa.1 And after the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel.
And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick; and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, inquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, to heal this disease.
But the angel of Jehovah said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them: Is there no God in Israel, that ye go to inquire of Baal-zebub, god of Ekron?
Now therefore thus saith the Lord: From the bed to which you have gone up, not come down, but surely die. So Elijah went.
And the messengers returned to him; and he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back?
And they said to him, A man came out to meet us, and told us, Go, return to the king who sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord: Is there no God in Israel, that thou sendest to inquire of Baal -Zebube the god of Ekron? So the bed to which you have gone up, not come down, but surely die.
And he said unto them, What was the appearance of the man who came to meet you and told you these words?
And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girded with a leather belt. And I said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.
The fire from heaven consumes hundred men
Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty; and he went up to him (for, behold, he sat on top of the mountain), he said to him: Man of God, the king said, Come down.
And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I, therefore, a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. Then fire came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with their fifties; he answered him, saying, O man of God, thus saith the king: Come down depressa. And Elias said: If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
And again he sent a third captain of fifty with their fifties; then climbed the captain of fifty, and came and stood on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, saying: Man of God, is, I pray thee, precious in your eyes my life and the life of these fifty thy servants.
Behold, fire came down from heaven, and consumed the two former captains of fifty with their fifties; however, now be precious in your eyes my life.
And the angel of Jehovah said to Elijah, Go down with him, fear not. And he arose, and went down with him to the king.
And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord: Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? Is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word? So that bed on which you have gone up, not come down, but shalt surely die.
So he died according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken; and Jehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Joram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah; because he had no son.
The rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
Elijah is taken up into heaven in a fiery chariot
came to pass, when the LORD was about to take up Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
And Elijah said to Elisha, Tarry, because the LORD hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave you. So it came to Bethel.
The sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said, You know that the Lord will take away thy master from your head? And he said, I also know it; be still.
And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, gets you here, for Yahweh has sent me to Jericho. But he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave you. And so were the Jericó. The sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said to him, You know that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head? And he said, I also know it; be still.
And Elijah said, Tarry, because the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. But he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave you. And so both were together.
And fifty men of the sons of the prophets, and stood by far: and they two stood by the Jordan.
And Elijah took his mantle and folded it, and smote the waters, and they were divided on both sides; and they went over on dry. came to pass, when they were gone, Elijah said to Elisha, Ask me what you want me to do for you before I am taken from you. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
And he said, have asked a hard thing; If you see me when taken from you, it shall be done to you, but if not, do not do it.
And it came to pass, as they went walking and talking, suddenly a fiery chariot with fiery horses parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
Elisha, Elijah's successor
And Elisha saw it, cried: My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen! And I never saw him again; and, picking up his clothes, and rent them in two parts.
He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him; and, turning back, he stopped at the Jordan.
And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? When he struck the waters, they parted from each other; and Elisha went over.
Seeing him, then, the sons of the prophets who were to view at Jericho, they said, The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.:
