Now Sarai, Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an Egyptian servant, whose name was Hagar.
And Sarai said to Abram, Behold, the LORD hath restrained me from giving birth; Take, for my servant; perhaps I will have her children. And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
So he took Sarai, Abram's wife, Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, and gave her in marriage to her husband Abram, after ten years that Abram dwelt in the land of Canaã.4 And it unto Hagar, and she conceived ; and seeing she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
Then Sarai said to Abram, My wrong be upon thee; I put my maid into thy bosom; she now seeing conceived, I was despised in her eyes; the LORD judge between me and thee.
But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to him what is good in thy sight. And Sarai afflicted her, and she fled from her face.
And the angel of Jehovah found her near a source of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, where you come from, and where are you going? And I said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
Then said the LORD Angel: Makes Return to thy mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.
I said to him the angel of Jehovah: greatly multiply thy seed, that will not be numbered for multitude will be.
I also told him the angel of Yahweh: Behold, your womb and bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
And he will be a wild man, and his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him; and dwell on the face of all his brethren.
And she called the name of Jehovah that spake unto her, Thou art God who sees me; because I said I did not look well for him that seeth me?

And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael.
